Cathedral City is a city in Riverside County in the US state of California with around 51,200 inhabitants (as of 2010). The urban area has a size of 61,233 square kilometers and averages 100 meters above sea level .
The city is located in southern California in the Coachella Valley between the cities of Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage . The urban area is crossed by California State Route 111 , which ensures smooth traffic connections. In the city, especially in the summer months, there is an increased incidence of tourism , which is favored by the good transport connections. From an economic point of view, tourism is therefore of central importance for the city and its region.
The singers Frank Sinatra and Sonny Bono are buried here.

Cathedral City is located in central Riverside County in California in the United States . The city is bordered by Palm Springs to the west and Rancho Mirage to the south and east , otherwise it is surrounded by unincorporated territory. California State Route 111 runs through the city and Interstate 10 to the north outside of the center .
Cathedral City has 51,200 inhabitants (as of 2010) and is thus the second largest city in the Coachella Valley , only Indio has a higher population. The urban area extends over an area of 56.349 km², of which 55.683 km² are land area; the population density is thus 919.5 inhabitants per square kilometer and is average. The center of Cathedral City is at an altitude of 100 meters.
Demographics
The 2010 census registered 51,200 residents of the city. That was an increase of around 9,000 in a decade; In 2000 the population of Cathedral City was around 42,600. This increase is due in particular to the strong immigration of Hispanic immigrants, to which the southern part of the state of California in particular is subject. The population group most strongly represented at the moment is that of whites of European origin, followed by Hispanic Americans and immigrants, also known as Latinos . Afro-Americans are barely represented at just 2.5 percent of the city's total population. Asians are also a minority. The number of households was around 17,000 according to the census.
history
The city was named after Cathedral Canyon south of Cathedral City. This in turn got its name in 1850 from Colonel Henry Washington, whom the rock formations in the canyon reminded of a cathedral . The city itself has only existed since the property was divided in 1925 and received the title of City in 1981 . In the two decades that followed, Cathedral City saw several population increases.
From the end of the 1990s, attempts were made to renew the inner city of Cathedral City in a revitalization project . Among other things, a new town hall and the IMAX / Mary Pickford cinema complex were built. The total area of newly built or converted shops was 0.53 km². The project was largely completed by 2005.

Kathleen DeRosa has served as Mayor of Cathedral City since 2004.
Cathedral City is part of the 28th District in the California Senate , currently represented by Democrat Ted Lieu , and the 56th District of the California State Assembly , represented by Democrat V. Manuel Perez . Cathedral City also belongs to California's 36th Congressional District , which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R + 1 and is represented by Democrat Raul Ruiz .
economy
The various golf resorts and tourist attractions represent an important building block for Cathedral City's economy, for example the "Desert Oasis Hotel / Resort" by Lawrence Welk is located in the Cathedral Canyon Country Club . Further golf courses are the “De Anza Palm Springs Country Club” and the “Mobile Home Park” as well as the outdoor resorts “RV Golf Club Palm Springs” and “Doral Desert Princess Resort and Golf Club”.
Cathedral City has a large car dealership called the Palm Springs Auto Mall, which is on the Palm Springs border , but the store is on the side of California State Route 111 and Perez Road that is on Cathedral City.
On the third weekend in September, Cathedral City holds an annual Mexican Independence Day festival .
Personalities
Actress Suzanne Somers lived in Cathedral City as a teenager and still has a second home in neighboring Palm Desert . In addition, actors Robert Duvall and Martin Landau used Cathedral City as a winter residence in the 1960s and showmaster Monty Hall in the 1990s. The current WBO light welterweight champion, Timothy Bradley , is from Cathedral City and graduated from high school there. The singer Lalo Guerrero spent his final years in Cathedral City.
In the Desert Memorial Park there are the graves of several celebrities, such as Frank Sinatra and Sonny Bono .
