The Perfect Storm is a non-fiction book by Sebastian Junger which was published in English in 1997 by WW Norton & Company. It deals with the true story of the sinking of the fishing ship " Andrea Gail " in October 1991.

content

The book tells the story of the fishing trawler Andrea Gail from Gloucester , who got caught in an unusually strong storm in the North Atlantic in October 1991 and has been missing since then. There were six sailors on board the ship. In his book, Junge describes the last days of these sailors, as far as researchable. The Andrea Gail had set sail to catch swordfish . The author first describes the background of the seafarers, the small town of Gloucester, the circumstances and hardships of swordfishers and the problems of the swordfish industry. The book follows the seafarers and their families shortly before and during the storm. Events of other ships in the storm are also shown.

It also shows the course of the eponymous storm. The storm was a special feature in that the remains of a tropical cyclone and a hurricane met a storm of polar origin coming from the northeast. The storms combined into a single storm, which was accordingly heavy.

author

The author (born January 17, 1962 in Belmont, Massachusetts ) lived most of his life on the Massachusetts coast , where much of the plot of the book takes place. He is a freelance journalist who wrote for various major magazines. Young and Kim the Leek lived in Gloucester to write the book. In the process of writing this book, he says he has developed the greatest respect for the employees of the Gloucester fishing industry and their families.

filming

The book was made into a film in 2000; the film “ Der Sturm ” (director: Wolfgang Petersen ) added an emotional framework to the book, especially in relation to Andrea Gail's final hours , which the book did not contain in this form.
