Beaumont is now a growing planned city . According to estimates, the population will be 125,000 in 2040.

geography

Beaumont is located in northern Riverside County in the US state of California . Adjacent places are Banning in the east, Cherry Valley in the north and Calimesa in the northwest. Beaumont is connected to the road network via Interstate 10 and California State Routes 60 and 79 . Due to Beaumont's location at the highest point of the San Gorgonio Pass , the height of the highways to the neighboring cities of Banning and Calimesa gradually drops.

Beaumont has 36,877 inhabitants ( 2010 census ) and covers an area of 80.098 km², of which 80.062 km² are land; the population density is thus 460.6 inhabitants per square kilometer and is comparatively low. The center of Beaumont is at an altitude of 796 m.

climate

In summer, temperatures usually rise to 35  ° C , while in winter they drop to an average of 11  ° C. Because of its high location, Beaumont is usually three to five degrees Celsius colder than in lower-lying cities in the vicinity such as Riverside , Hemet , San Jacinto , Perris or Palm Springs . Snowfall is rare in Beaumont.

The slightly lower temperatures and the clean air compared to neighboring cities make Beaumont a popular area for new developments in the Inland Empire . Along with San Bernardino , Fontana, and Banning , Beaumont is one of the windiest cities in Southern California .

The average annual rainfall is 432 mm.

history

During the early 1850s, surveyors combed the area around what is now Beaumont in search of a mountain pass that would connect areas in the east and the Pacific . In 1853, the San Gorgonio Pass was discovered by a group of surveyors led by Lieutenant RS Williamson, an envoy from the United States government . The find sparked enthusiasm and gave hope that the plans could be realized; soon the construction of a railway line from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean was planned. From the early 1860s, the Southern Pacific Railroad laid tracks through the area that would later become Beaumont. At the highest point of the pass, the Edgar Station was established, named after one of the scientists who contributed to the discovery of the mountain pass. Edgar Station served as a rest stop for rail travelers coming from the Mojave Desert to the Los Angeles area. A short time later, Edgar Station changed its name to San Gorgonio . Gradually, the place also attracted permanent residents.

On November 18, 1912, San Gorgonio was elevated to the City . Since then, the city has had its current name Beaumont (French for beautiful mountain ). In 1927 the young town had 857 inhabitants, five churches, a public library, a bank, a high school, two local newspapers, several sawmills, packing houses and a drainage system. Beaumont became one of the largest apple-growing areas in Riverside County and in its early years was referred to as the "land of the big red apple" by its own people. In 1930, the apple orchards in and around Beaumont raised $ 200,000. When the previously little-known city of Palm Springs grew a bit east of Beaumont from 1930 and became a popular holiday resort, Beaumont also experienced an increase in tourists and residents; Beaumont tried to benefit from the flourishing neighboring city by building so-called guest ranches . According to a postcard from the 1930s or 1940s, for example, the Highland Springs Guest Ranch offered its guests horseback riding , tennis , archery , horseshoes , swimming , shuffleboard , table tennis , baseball , standard dances , massages , basketball and beds for the night.

During the Cold War , the Potrero Canyon south of Beaumont was a test site for Lockheed missiles operated by Rocketdyne . In 2003, most of the property was sold to the State of California . Toxic chemicals left over from rocket fuel and testing activities have been found in the soil and groundwater in the test area; Cleaning up the contaminated area is to begin in the next few years. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife plans to open the valley to the public as the housing boom at the beginning of the new millennium has also caused urban sprawl to reach the last remaining valleys of the California Inland Empire .

Since 2000, many Southern California residents have flocked to Beaumont; The reasons for this are the low real estate costs and the proximity to Los Angeles. As a result, the population grew 130.5 percent from 2000 to 2006, placing Beaumont in second place behind Lincoln on the list of Fastest Growing Suburbs in California . This has worried many previous residents as they feared increasing student numbers, increased water demand and traffic problems on Interstate 10 in and around Beaumont.

Several planned settlements are being built in Beaumont , some of which have already been completed. Several hypermarkets recently opened , including a Walmart , The Home Depot hardware store, and branches of Staples , Best Buy , Bed Bath & Beyond , Petco and Ross stores . In the nearby Banning there are also supermarkets from Albertsons and Stater Bros.

In 2012 Beaumont celebrated its centenary.

Behind the Santa Claritas district of Valencia , Beaumont is considered to be the fastest growing planned city in the Los Angeles area .

politics

Beaumont is part of the 23rd District in the California Senate , currently represented by Republican Mike Morrell , and the 42nd District of the California State Assembly , represented by Republican Brian Nestande .
