Jackie Mills

Jackie Mills (* 11. March 1922 in Brooklyn ; † 22. March 2010 in Beaumont (California) ) was an American jazz - drummer , composer and music producer .

Mills, who grew up in Harlem , first played the guitar before he switched to drums at the age of ten and started working as a professional musician at the age of 15; initially he played in local clubs. In the course of his early career he belonged to the bands of Charlie Barnet , Harry James , Tommy Dorsey , Teddy Powell , Boyd Raeburn , Benny Goodman , Rene Touzet and Dizzy Gillespie from the late 1940s . He also worked on recordings by Sonny Criss , André Previn ( Previn Plays the Piano , 1947), Lionel Hampton , Stan Getz , Gerry Wiggins , Jimmy McGriff , Freddie Roach ( Soul Book , 1967), Tadd Dameron and Dodo Marmarosa ( Piano Man , 1978) with. Under his own name, Mills played several tracks in a quintet line-up (1948) with Stan Hasselgard and Barney Kessel . He participated in a total of 161 recording sessions between 1943 and 1966.

After working as a session musician and producer for labels like Columbia , MGM , Mainstream , Capitol and Liberty Records , he founded the Larrabee Sound Studio . As a producer, he was instrumental in the careers of Janis Joplin , Irene Kral and Bobby Sherman . He was also (with Tommy Wolf and Fred Astaire ) co-founder of the label Choreo Records (from 1962 Äva Records , named after Astaire's daughter) and the music publisher Choreo Music . As a songwriter, Mills also wrote music for cartoons and in the early 1970s for television series such as Three Girls and Three Boys , The US Of Archie and The Ghost Busters .
