Herbie steward
Herbert "Herbie" Steward (born May 7, 1926 in Los Angeles ; † August 9, 2003 ) was an American jazz saxophonist (tenor, alto) and also a flutist.
Life
He played in the band of Barney Bigard , Freddie Slack , from 1944 to 1946 with Artie Shaw , with Alvino Rey , Butch Stone and Gene Roland . Steward became known as a member of Woody Herman's Second Herd (1947), as one of the Four Brothers - alongside Stan Getz , Zoot Sims, and Serge Chaloff . He then worked in Los Angeles with Red Norvo (1948), Artie Shaw (1949), Tommy Dorsey , Elliot Lawrence (1950/51), Harry James (1951 to 1954) and Al John (1959/60). After that he was mostly a studio musician. He also worked as the sideman of Billie Holiday , Chet Baker , Barney Kessel , Benny Goodman , Art Pepper , Roy Eldridge and others and released several albums as a band leader.
