al-Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmudi ( Arabic البغدادي علي المحمودي, DMG al-Baġdādī ʿAlī al-Maḥmūdī ; * 1945 ?) Has been Secretary General of the General People's Committee since March 3, 2006 , which in Libya roughly corresponded to the office of Prime Minister. He was the successor to Shukri Ghanim .

Career

Mahmudi was deputy head of government from June 2003 to March 2006. Before that he was Minister of Health.

As deputy head of government, he had two huge infrastructure projects to oversee:

He was also chairman of the board of the Libyan Investment Authority , the Libyan sovereign wealth fund.

On August 21, 2011, in the course of the Libyan civil war , he fled to the Tunisian island of Jerba from the troops of the National Transitional Council , which marched into the capital Tripoli . On September 21, 2011, he was arrested while crossing the Algerian- Tunisian border in Tozeur in Tamaghza and sentenced to six months in prison for illegally crossing the border. On September 27, a court overturned the sentence and he was released from detention. On October 17, 2011, he was admitted to a military hospital in Tunis . There were problems with a hunger strike , with which al-Mahmudi wanted to protest against his re-imprisonment. On November 8, 2011, a court in Tunis decided that the request of the new Libyan government for his extradition should be granted. His lawyer and Amnesty International criticized the decision, saying that al-Mahmudi was at risk of serious human rights violations in Libya. He then asked the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for assistance. He was finally acquitted by a Tunisian court in mid-February 2012 because of his illegal border crossing. In May 2012, the Tunisian Ministry of Justice announced that al-Mahmudi would soon be extradited to Libya. He was finally extradited to Libya on June 24, 2012. The authorities said that he would face crimes against the Libyan people.
