Mustafa AG Abu Shagur ( Arabic مصطفى أبو شاقور, DMG Muṣṭafā Abū Šāqūr , born February 15, 1951 in Suq al-Jumʿa ) is a Libyan electrical engineer and politician . From September 12, 2012 to October 7, 2012, he was Prime Minister of his country.

Career

Abu Shagur completed his undergraduate studies at Tripoli University . He then continued his studies in the United States. He received his Masters and PhD degrees from the California Institute of Technology . He specializes in micro-optics and nanophotonics. Abu Shagur has taught at the University of Rochester and the University of Alabama in Huntsville . From 2002 to 2008 he was Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). There he headed the research program for microsystems of the engineering faculty and the corresponding doctoral program. From 2008 he set up the RIT branch in Dubai and was its first president. He left the position to return to Libya in 2011 and join the interim government.

Abu Shagur is the founder of two companies. Photronix manufactures fiber optic components in Malaysia . LiquidLight Inc. develops and manufactures optical network systems.

politics

Abu Shagur was a member of the National Front for the Saving of Libya (NFSL), a resistance group against the Gaddafi government , during the 1980s and 1990s . Until his appointment as head of government, he was a leading member of the NFSL emerged party of the National Front . Abu Shagur is considered a technocrat. After the Libyan civil war , he was appointed Vice Prime Minister in the interim government of Abdel Rahim el-Kib .

On September 12, 2012, Shagur was elected Prime Minister by the General National Congress in the second ballot with 96 out of 200 votes and prevailed against Mahmud Jibril of the Alliance of National Forces . The Justice and Building Party of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood supported Abu Shagur to prevent Jibril from winning.

On October 2, 2012, Schagur presented his planned cabinet with 26 ministers, including no member of the parliamentary group with the most votes, the Alliance of National Forces. The National Congress, however, refused to approve this cabinet. After it failed in the second attempt, Schagur was withdrawn from the contract to form a government on October 7, 2012 after a vote of no confidence.
