The General National Congress ( Arabic المؤتمر الوطني العام, DMG al-Muʾtamar al-Waṭanī al-ʿāmm , Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⴳⵔⴰⵡ ⴰⵖⴻⵍⵏⴰⵡ ⴰⵎⴰⵜⵓ Agraw Aɣelnaw Amatu ) was the highest legislative authority in Libya from 2012 to 2014 . He was elected in a popular election on July 7, 2012 and replaced on August 8 at the National Transitional Council , which has ruled the country since the end of the Libyan civil war .

At the end of July, the Council of Representatives , the second parliament in Libya's history, was elected , consisting of just 200 independent candidates.

In September 2014, the General National Congress was reinstated as the New General National Congress in the course of the civil war in Libya by the counter-government in Tripoli as a parliament. Since then, Nuri Busahmein has again presided over the parliament , which is not recognized internationally .

    tasks

The current Legislativsitzung was first on 7 July 2012 elected . In contrast to what was initially planned by the Transitional Council, the General National Congress will not elect the members of the constituent committee that has yet to be formed. This plan met with opposition, particularly from the eastern Libyan region of Kyrenaica .

The Congress had elected the new Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shagur and a new cabinet within 30 days of its first meeting held on August 9, 2012 .

    Current composition

The General National Congress consisted of 200 members, 80 of whom are elected by proportional representation and 120 as independents in individual member districts. The western region had 102 MPs, the eastern 60, the south 29, and the central region, including the Sirte and Jufra, 9.
