action

Dr. Marie Steiner is an aspiring theology lecturer and is annoyed with the fact that as a woman she is not allowed to hold a priesthood in the church. She herself researches the connection between sexuality and the Bible, so that she repeatedly unravels her colleagues, which is why her upcoming professorship is in danger. Through her studies, she maintains some contacts with the BDSM scene and, at the same time, learns, as she always has an open ear for her students and fellow human beings, that the young student Gudrun was impregnated by a priest, but not by whom. She also advises the homosexual Uli Schneider, one of her students who is about to be ordained a priest, to choose love and not necessarily the priesthood. Since this triggers an internal conflict in him that drives him to suicide , Steiner is blamed for his death by her colleagues.

At the same time, Marie also gets to know the art restorer Paul Gruber, who expresses himself skeptical about Jesus and comes closer to her in the process. He castigates the church's hypocrisy and lack of love. He kisses Marie and they both have sex that is so violent that Marie sustains several cuts and wounds. This confuses Marie, wondering why she feels intense love despite the pain. She later spends a full weekend of sex with him, during which Paul confesses to her that he is jealous because she doesn't love him as much as she loves Jesus. Since he wants to own her, however, he tattoos her bottom. This encourages her so much that she takes her students on a trip to the red light district to visit Domina Carola. At the same time, Stefan is already intriguing so that he himself and not Marie becomes a professor. When Stefan then discovers the BDSM acts between Gruber and Marie, he wants to confront Gruber. But there is a fight between the two, which Gruber can decide for himself, but still makes the decision to part with Marie.

Marie cannot leave Gruber, however, so that she visits him at night and is shocked to find that he is a family man with his wife and child. Your illusion of love, truth and Gruber will be destroyed. In her need she seeks out Carola, who explains her own worldview to her. All men are liars and salvation can only be found through punishment. As an illustrative example, Marie is allowed to whip a BDSM customer, imagining that it is Gruber. That is obviously good for her, which is why she wants to reconcile with Gruber. But she refuses. In the meantime, she is finally betrayed by Stefan, so that he is finally appointed professor himself. Marie not only learns that Gudrun died while attempting an abortion, but also that Stefan was the child's father. She is furious that only men are allowed to become priests in the church, even though they are all just lying. When she found out that Gruber was beating his wife, she was finally enough.

Marie seeks out Gruber and identifies herself as a dominatrix. He is excited. But when she whips him for it and forces him to lick her boots, he realizes that she only came to humiliate him for beating his wife. His wife appears in the same room and Marie hands over power to her, so Gruber will never hit her again. From then on she feels like a servant of God. When Stefan's inaugural speech is to be given during the Pope's visit, Stefan is so gripped by his guilt that he publicly confesses his relationship with Gudrun and his intrigues towards Marie. He begins to whip himself. Marie runs into his pulpit, stops him and protects him. With this deed everyone realizes that Marie has a good soul and that everyone can be forgiven.

criticism

“A decidedly speculative (television) film, which in the brackish water of a pretended and supposed church criticism that concerns the complexes of sexuality, abortion, celibacy, homosexuality and ordination, primarily the voyeuristic cinematic representation of sadomasochistic excesses in the atmosphere of an incense-impregnated, but otherwise completely ahistorical or virtual church, which does not exist. Even more unbearable than the sought-after visual obscenity is the hypocritical mendacity of the half-baked film, which ends in a sticky fraternization celebration between the parish, 'priest candidates', ex-dominatrix and clergy. "

"It doesn't matter whether it is long or short, how thick or thin: the revue of the number, which flaunts random quotes and pathetic gestures, is as ridiculous as it is absurd."

“The autobiography of Marie Emmermann mutates here into a teardrop on the lowest penny issue level. [...] So embarrassing that it's almost funny again. "

publication

The film, produced on behalf of the German TV broadcaster RTL , differs in large parts from the novel. According to the then program director Sam Davis, the film was conceived as "one of the most discussed films of the year". Because of the controversial issues around BDSM, church and religion, the film was rewritten, re-edited and postponed several times. Even before the first official broadcast on the Day of Repentance and Prayer , a holiday of the Protestant Church , the film was postponed three times. The broadcast was also canceled. The film first aired on February 11, 1998 at 8:15 pm and had an audience rating of 7 million. The voluntary self-control television complained about the film because it saw "the physical, emotional and mental well-being of children under 16 years of age" at risk during prime time , so they gave the film to the state media authorities for advice.
