The Battle of Buchenberg was a military clash between Swiss mercenaries and the soldiers of the Kempten Abbey . It took place on March 17, 1460 near the village of Buchenberg .

background

Gerwig von Sulmentingen , the prince abbot of Kempten, had ordered his manager Jörg Beck to get him some loads of wine. Beck delivered the grape juice requested by the prince abbot at the beginning of 1460. However, the prince abbot is said to have accused his administrator of dishonesty and accused him of an incorrect account. He felt wrongly accused and fought doggedly with the abbot for his rehabilitation.

Although the Beck of spiritual and secular dishes, u. a. the court court in Rottweil , his innocence was confirmed, the prince abbot did not recognize the judgments.

Jörg Beck was therefore forced to argue (which was not an uncommon measure at the time). He hired 334 war-experienced mercenaries from Switzerland .

The battle

When the abbot found out that the Swiss were approaching, he deployed his entire army. The approximately 1300–1400 men, mostly farmers from the ruled area, moved to Buchenberg, which was held by the Swiss.

On March 17, 1460 there was a battle between the prince's troops and the mercenaries. After an initial volley, which did not hit the praying Swiss, they stormed the prince's troops with halberds. After they had knocked down the first row, the other men of the prince fled.

While the mercenaries had only two deaths to complain about, 183 men of the prince fell on the opposing side.

The St. George Chapel commemorates the battle.

consequences

After the prince abbot had learned of the defeat, he fled the Kempten monastery to Memmingen to avoid capture. He was deposed from the monastery a few days later. The Kempten monastery paid the wages of the Swiss mercenaries and reimbursed all other costs of the campaign. Jörg Beck received damages, compensation for pain and suffering and a declaration of honor.

In memory of the fallen soldiers of the Kempten Monastery, the St. Georg Chapel was built in 1461 on the western outskirts of Buchenberg .
