On March 17, 1460, Swiss mercenaries and 1,300 soldiers from the prince abbot of Kempten took part in the battle of Buchenberg . In 1485 the place received market rights, Buchenberg was the seat of an upper and lower court before 1803 and has always been part of the Kempten prince monastery .

Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and the secularization of 1803 the place belongs to Bavaria. In 1818, with the Bavarian municipal edict, today's political municipality was created.
