Craon is a commune with 4507 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Mayenne in the region Pays de la Loire ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Château-Gontier and the canton of Château-Gontier . Residents of the parish are called Craonnaises .

history

Gregory of Tours names a place Cracatonnum, vicus der Civitas Andecavorum, as the predecessor of this community. Craon was a remarkable fortress in the Middle Ages, consisting of 27 towers and 1,600 meters of city walls, which served to secure the border between France and Brittany . The Lords of Craon (see Craon (noble family) ) were among the first barons of Anjou . In the 8th Huguenot War (1585–1598) Craon was besieged by the royal army, but appalled by the Spanish troops who had landed in Brittany.
