history

The founding history of the Craon Monastery is closely linked to the noble Cossé-Brissac family.

Odyssey of the noble family Cossé-Brissac

The noble family Cossé-Brissac , who came from Craon (30 km southwest of Laval ) and who lived at the court in Versailles , went into exile in 1791 with three children in Telgte and Münster , and in 1798 with Louis XVIII. to Mitau near Riga and in 1800 after deportation by Tsar Paul back to Münster. In 1807 she fled from Napoleon again to Riga, where the now widowed mother ran a girls' school in collaboration with the Jesuit Joseph Coincé (1764-1833). In March 1815, the mother returned to Paris with two daughters, but then had to flee again from Napoleon and moved to Pontoise and finally to Rouen .

Délie de Cossé-Brissac prioress in Rouen

In July 1815 the 28-year-old daughter Délie (1787–1869), whose first communion took place in Telgte in 1801 and who had proven herself as a teacher in Riga, entered the monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Sacrament in Rouen in July 1815 , and was clothed in 1716 ( religious name : Saint-Louis de Gonzague ) and made profession in 1817. In 1826 she was elected superior ( prioress ) of the monastery.

In 1829 the prioress renounced her office in Rouen and founded a daughter monastery with a few co-sisters in Craon, where after the death of the mother the family castle was sold and the proceeds were used to purchase the former Dominican monastery, with financial help from the founder's siblings and with approval the Bishops of Le Mans (Claude-Madeleine de La Myre-Mory 1819-1828 and Philippe-Marie-Thérèse-Guy Carron 1829-1833). The convent was named Immaculée Conception de Marie (Immaculate Conception). In 1838 he joined the Bourges Benedictine Monastery to the Congregation of the Most Holy Sacrament. The monastery built a monastery church with a dome in 1857. The subsidiary in Rennes only lasted from 1860 to 1863. The founding prioress died in 1869 at the age of 82. The Monastère Notre-Dame d'Orient monastery, located in Laval-Roquecezière since 1825 for the care of pilgrims, has been attached to Craon since 2007 and is managed by its prioress. The Craon Monastery (at 15 Rue de la Liberation ), which was artistically renovated by Paricia Menouha (* 1951), now has around 20 sisters.
