La Roë is a French municipality with 245 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Mayenne in the region Pays de la Loire .

geography

La Roë is 11.2 kilometers southeast of La Guerche-de-Bretagne and 13.9 kilometers northwest of Craon .

history

The Abbey of La Roë was founded by Robert von Arbrissel (1045–1116) in 1096, although he resumed his life as a traveling preacher in 1098, the monastery prospered. In the Huguenot Wars (1562-1598) the abbey was devastated. It was partially rebuilt in the 18th century, but destroyed again in 1796 during the French Revolution .

Attractions

The abbey is now part of the municipality and is partly privately owned, it is partly classified as a monument historique . Among other things, the Romanesque abbey church has been preserved. In the church there is a bell with Latin inscription from 1745 and a prayer chair from the first half of the 17th century, which are also classified as MH .

The main occupations in La Roë are arable farming and the breeding of domestic cattle, domestic pigs and poultry.
