La Guerche-de-Bretagne is a French municipality with 4243 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Brittany ; it belongs to the arrondissement Fougères-Vitré and is the capital of the canton of La Guerche-de-Bretagne .
history
In the early Middle Ages, La Guerche-de-Bretagne was on the border between Brittany and the Breton march . The "Forêt de La Guerche" is a remnant of the border forest that separated Brittany from Bas-Maine . Etymologically , "Guerche" means a fortified structure made of earth, such fortifications mostly date from the 7th to 9th centuries. Nothing is left of the eponymous "Guerche". The historian N.-Y. Tonnerre suspects that the fortifications in La Guerche-de-Bretagne were not a protective measure against the French or the Anjou, but against the Normans . In 1890 the place name La Guerche was changed to La Guerche-de-Bretagne.
