Baláže (Slovak 1948-1968 and until 1927 alternative "Blaze", Hungarian Balázs , German to the 16th century Liptscherseifen ) is a municipality in the middle of Slovakia , with a population of 218 (December 31, 2019) and is located in the Banská Bystrica District belonging to the Banskobystrický kraj .
geography
Baláže lies in the Starohorské vrchy mountains in the shadow of the Low Tatras to the east by the Ľupčica (German Liptsch ) brook , which arises from the confluence of the Banský potok and Čeremošné and flows further down into the Hron . The center of the village is 15 kilometers from Banska Bystrica .
The former town of Kalište , which lies further up the valley , has also been part of the municipality since 1949 .
history
The place arose in the 15th century in what was then the neighboring town of Priechod and grew by two copper smelting works on the Ľupčica stream , which were founded by a Neusohl miner named Johann Kolmann. In 1529 the place is mentioned as Huttae Lyptczyczae , in 1531 as gaza Lyptzcicz and in 1540 as Lypschersaifen . After several changes of ownership, the huts came into the possession of the Thurzo -Fugger company towards the end of the 15th century, which owned the huts until 1546. After its decline, the remaining independent miners processed the dump material until the middle of the 17th century. After that, forestry and charcoal burning were the main occupations of the population from the 18th century.
After 1918, the place in Sohl County and the Kingdom of Hungary became part of Czechoslovakia. Baláže played an important role during the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) in 1944 and, together with Kalište, was the center of the so-called "Partisan Republic". After the suppression of the SNP, the place remained unoccupied until it was burned down by German troops on March 20, 1945 and the entire population was murdered, just as had happened in Kalište two days earlier. In 1947 the reconstruction of the place began; In 1949 the municipality of Kalište came to Baláže, which was never rebuilt.
