Turecká (Hungarian Török ) is a small community in the Okres Banská Bystrica within the Banskobystrický kraj in Slovakia with about 140 inhabitants.
The municipality is located in a narrow side valley of the Starohotský creek in the Great Fatra Mountains , within the boundaries of the local national park, under the Krížna mountain ( 1574 m nm ). It can only be reached on a district road three kilometers away from Staré Hory and is 17 kilometers north of Banská Bystrica .
Turecká, more precisely the Turecká valley, is mentioned for the first time in 1563 as vallis Turetzka and was a woodcutter and coal village that served to supply the huts in Staré Hory (German Old Mountains) and Špania Dolina (German Herrengrund). The division between an upper and a lower part has also been documented since the late 17th century. From 1808 to 1990 she was part of Staré Hory.
The name should not derive from Turks ( Turecká means Turkish in German), but from the location on an old road to the Turz landscape (Slov. Turiec ).
