Staré Hory ( German Altgebirg , Hungarian Óhegy ) is a municipality in central Slovakia . It is located at the foot of the Starohorské vrchy and the Great Fatra , named after the place , on the road connecting Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok , about 14 kilometers from Banská Bystrica.
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1536, but the settlement was founded in the 13th century and focused on mining copper . Later the place became known for its lace craft . Turecká was also part of the village until 1990 .
In addition to the main town, there are the municipal parts Dolný Jelenec , Horný Jelenec , Polkanová and Valentová in the surrounding mountains .
