Podkonice (Hungarian Padkóc - until 1882 Podkonic ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 913 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to the Okres Banská Bystrica , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj .
geography
The municipality is located on the southern slope of the Low Tatras below the Kozí chrbát mountain range, which merges further west into the Starohorské vrchy mountains. It is located on a stream in the catchment area of the Hron . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 529 m nm and is 13 kilometers from Banská Bystrica .
Neighboring municipalities are Donovaly and Liptovská Osada (district Korytnica) in the north, Hiadeľ in the northeast, Moštenica in the east, Slovenská Ľupča in the south, Priechod in the west and Baláže in the northwest.
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1340 as possessio Connyce and was part of the estate of Liptsch Castle . For reasons that have not yet been clarified, a new village was mentioned as early as 1356, which lies below the old place, hence the name Podkonice ("below Konice"). In 1828 there were 123 houses and 979 residents who lived from agriculture, sheep farming and as peddlers, as well as from forestry and work in the surrounding sawmills and ironworks.
Until 1918 the place in Sohl County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or today Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Podkonice had 862 inhabitants, of whom 829 were Slovaks, three Serbs and Czechs and one Croat, one Magyar and one Moravian and two inhabitants who indicated a different ethnic group. 22 residents gave no information in this regard. 769 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 20 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Seventh-day Adventists, the Greek Catholic Church and the Evangelical Methodist Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 48 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 17 residents was not determined.
