history

The castle was built during the reign of the Hungarian King Béla IV , shortly after the Mongol invasion and was first mentioned in writing in 1250 as Liptza . In connection with the founding of the city of Neusohl, a document from 1255 states nova villa Bystriciensis prope Lipche . In the Middle Ages, the castle was always owned by the royal family, although this fact was not always respected (see Matthew Csák and Hungarian minor kingdoms ). Kings stayed in the castle especially during the hunt, for example Karl Robert von Anjou and Louis the Great .

After an earthquake in 1443, which severely damaged the castle, it was renovated and expanded, and attacks by the Hussites had to be expected towards the middle of the 15th century . In 1490 the facility came to the Dóczy family , who were known for their arbitrary behavior towards mining towns and the lower nobility. For this reason, the castle was confiscated in 1531 and given to the Neusohl Chamber. Through a lease came in 1572 a rich Kremnica citizen named Paul Rubigall to manage the castle Liptsch and let it expand further, partly because of advancing Turks occupied the Hungarian territories . After Paul's death, the Polish nobleman Gaszpar Tribel settled in the castle.

The 17th century was characterized by uprisings against the Habsburgs, but only rebels led by Emmerich Thököly were able to take the castle for themselves for some time. In the middle of the 17th century the complex came to the Széchy dynasty : through a marriage with Mária Széchy, called "Venus von Muran", the castle came into the hands of Franz Wesselényi , the Palatine of Hungary. Because of his involvement in the magnate conspiracy (discovered shortly after Wesselényi's death in 1667), the castle was confiscated and from then on administered by castellans.

In 1703 an army from Franz II Rákóczi conquered the castle, in 1707 it returned to the king. The importance slowly declined, in the 18th century the castle was the site of a prison, while the administration moved to more comfortable country castles. After the end of serfdom in 1848, an orphanage was housed here in 1873 , which existed until the middle of the 20th century, in addition to a school and educational institution. During the Slovak National Uprising , prisoners of war were interned here ; after the end of the Second World War it was used in a variety of ways: educational institution, charity, location for the Socialist Youth Association in the 1980s and the regional monument office in the 1990s.

At the end of 2002, the Železiarne Podbrezová, as company acquired the castle and carried out a major renovation. Today the castle is open every day in July and August except Mondays, except in the high season only by prior arrangement. Weddings and various events are also held here.
