Moštenica (Hungarian Mosód - until 1888 Mostenic ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 235 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to Okres Banská Bystrica , a district of Banskobystrický kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in a valley at the transition from the Starohorské vrchy to the western part of the Low Tatras , at the confluence of Moštenický potok and Uhliarsky potok . There is a mineral spring about four kilometers north of Moštenica. The center of the village is at an altitude of 479  m nm and is 17 kilometers from Banská Bystrica .

Neighboring communities are Podkonice in the west and north, Hiadeľ in the east and Lučatín and Slovenská Ľupča in the south.

history

Moštenica was first mentioned in writing in 1340 as Mosnyce , other historical names are Gaza Mosthenicze (1513), Hütten Moschnitz (1563), Moschnitz (1622), Mostenitz (1780) and Mosstenica (1808). After the establishment of the Saiger Handelsgesellschaft Ungarischer Kupferhandel (initially named Fugger - Thurzo company after its founding families ) in Neusohl in 1495, two Seiger huts were built near Moštenica. They were an important part of society until the beginning of the 18th century and processed copper ore from the area around Špania Dolina and Staré Hory , after which it was adapted for iron ore processing . Two casting furnaces worked in the village until 1804, and between 1796 and 1870 there was an iron hammer for processing pig iron from Hronec . In 1828 there were 81 houses and 628 inhabitants who were employed in local iron and copper factories, but also in the sawmill and state forestry.

Until 1918 the place in Sohl County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or today Slovakia. During the Slovak National Uprising during World War II , a field hospital for partisans was built near Moštenica and the area was the scene of heavy fighting until the end of the war.

According to the 2011 census, 220 inhabitants lived in Moštenica, 205 of them Slovaks and one Magyar . 14 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

126 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 15 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, two residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. 46 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 30 inhabitants was not determined.
