Čerín (Hungarian Cserény - until 1888 Cserin , German Tscherin ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 438 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to the Okres Banská Bystrica , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj .

The village is located in the mountainous part of the Zvolenská kotlina basin , in the valley of the Zolná brook . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 405  m nm and is 14 kilometers from Banská Bystrica and 15 kilometers from Zvolen .

In addition to the main town of Čerín, the town of Čačín , which was incorporated in 1976, also belongs to the municipality.

Neighboring municipalities are Môlča and Oravce in the north, Dúbravica in the northeast, Hrochoť in the east, Sebedín-Bečov in the south and Dolná Mičiná in the west.

history

Čerín was first mentioned in writing in 1300 as Cheren , as part of the previously uninhabited wooded area in the Sohl domain. In 1424 the place became part of the Vígľaš castle estate. In 1578 the village was sacked by the Turks and in the late 16th century it had to pay tribute to the Ottoman Empire. In 1828 there were 32 houses and 241 inhabitants, who were mainly employed as farmers.

Until 1918 the place in Sohl County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or today Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 445 inhabitants in Čerín, including 419 Slovaks , three Moravians and one Magyar . 22 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

196 residents committed themselves to the Evangelical Church AB, 123 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, 10 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, seven residents each to the Baptists and the Old Catholic Church and two residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church; two residents professed a different denomination. 66 residents had no denomination and 32 residents had no denomination.

Buildings

  • Roman Catholic Martinskirche in Gothic style from the first half of the 14th century, rebuilt or renewed in the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries. Examples of Gothic wall painting and wooden ceilings in the early Renaissance style are worth seeing. A wooden bell tower can still be found inside the defensive wall built in the late 16th century.
