Donovaly ( Hungarian Dóval - until 1882 Donoval ) is a municipality in central Slovakia . It is located between the Starohorské vrchy , Low Tatras and Great Fatra mountains, about 26 km from Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok . The mountain pass on which the place is located bears the same name.
The community, which emerged from seven widely spaced charcoal settlements between 1618 and 1820, was first mentioned in writing in 1702 as Donnovall . The first settlements, founded by Germany at the time, were each given the name of the charcoal master who looked after them. Their current names are Donovaly , Hanesy , Sliačany , Mišúty , Mistríky , Polianka and the settlement Bul (l) y, which was incorporated after 1808 . The village, which made its living from the abundance of wood in the area, became a tourist destination at the beginning of the 20th century, but it was only when the pass road from Veľký Šturec was moved here that it became famous. It is particularly popular as a winter sports resort. The ski season runs from November to late March or early April, with dog sledding races also taking place.
The houses of the village, which have a large glazed veranda, differ significantly from the usual construction in the area and show strong alpine influences.
Events
Sled dog events are traditionally held. Europe and world championships have already been held in this way.
