The Veľký Šturec is a 1010 m high saddle ( mountain pass ) in the middle of Slovakia in the south-eastern foothills of the Great Fatra , between the mountains Krížna ( 1573 m nm ) and Zvolen ( 1402 m nm ), north of the town of Banská Bystrica .
Historically, the main connection from Banská Bystrica to Ružomberok ran over the pass , so it was on the shortest route from Budapest to Krakow . In the 1950s, the road was relocated across the village of Donovaly , not least because of dangerous hairpin bends and the route no longer appropriate for the traffic. Today there is no winter service and driving on the forest road is at your own risk.
The Path of the Heroes of the Slovak National Uprising , part of the E8 long-distance hiking trail, runs over the pass .
