It is part of the road from Budapest to Krakow and is therefore loaded with trucks.

The I / 59 begins in the north of the city of Banská Bystrica at a junction with the R1 expressway and runs mostly north; behind Staré Hory begins an uphill and winding route between the Low Tatras and the Great Fatra , which ends only after the Donovaly pass . Here the road also comes to the Banskobystrický kraj / Žilinský kraj border and continues through the Revúca valley to Ružomberok . There it crosses with West-Ost-Straße I / 18 . After crossing the Váh , it goes through another pass and passes through the Orava valley of the town Dolný Kubín and the old Arwaburg in Oravský Podzámok . Shortly before the Polish border at Trstená there is also the large Arwa reservoir .
