Horná Lehota (Dolný Kubín)

Horná Lehota ( Slovak until 1927 Lehôtka ; Hungarian Felsőlehota ) is a municipality in the north-center of Slovakia with 550 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is located in Okres Dolný Kubín within the Žilinský kraj and at the same time in the traditional Orava landscape .

geography

The village is located on the right bank of the Orava , enclosed between the Oravská Magura mountains to the north and a ridge of the Oravská vrchovina mountains south of the town. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 534 m nm and is 14 kilometers away from Dolný Kubín .

Neighboring municipalities are Babín in the north, Sedliacka Dubová in the east, Chlebnice in the southeast, Pribiš in the south and Oravský Podzámok in the west.

history

Country castle in Horná Lehota

Horná Lehota was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1420 as Lehotha and at the time it was founded it belonged to the rulership of the nearby Arwaburg . In 1587 the place came into the possession of the nobleman János Abaffy for services to the powerful Thurzo family ; the Abaffys had a country castle built towards the end of the 16th century. At the same time there were seven houses in Horná Lehota. In the 18th century there was an increase in population. In 1828 there were 81 houses and 634 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and potters. The first school was built in 1843. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Horná Lehota was ravaged by several fires and floods, and in the 1870s and 1880s there were also several population declines, first because of a plague epidemic and then because of waves of emigration, especially to the United States.

The place in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, embroidery, pottery and weaving were common.

According to the 2011 census, there were 552 inhabitants in Horná Lehota, including 547 Slovaks , two Poles and one Ukrainian . Two residents gave no information about their ethnicity .

535 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, four residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident to the Orthodox Church. Nine residents were non-denominational and three residents had no denomination.

traffic

The 1st order road 59 between Dolný Kubín and Tvrdošín passes through Horná Lehota ; a completed section of the R3 expressway is available for through traffic .

The place has a bus stop on Kraľovany – Trstená on the left bank of the Orava, which is connected to the place by a pedestrian bridge.
