Pokryváč (Hungarian Pokrivács ) is a municipality in the north-center of Slovakia with 163 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is located in Okres Dolný Kubín within the Žilinský kraj and at the same time in the traditional Orava landscape .

geography

The municipality is located in the southeastern part of the Oravská vrchovina mountain range in the source area of ​​the Pucovský potok brook . The center of the village is at an altitude of 640  m nm and is 12 kilometers from Dolný Kubín .

Neighboring communities are Pucov in the north, Malatiná in the east, Osádka in the south and Dolný Kubín ( Srňacie district ) in the west.

history

The place originated in the late 16th century and was founded under Wallachian law . In the first few years it had different names: it was called Rastoczna in 1593 , Nova Osada in 1596 , before it was named Pokrywacz in 1598 . Pokryváč belonged to the domain of the Arwaburg and was administered by inheritors. During the Kuruzzenkriege the village was devastated and only slowly recovered. In 1828 there were 51 houses and 302 inhabitants who were employed as linen weavers and wood craftsmen, plus there was an expanded sheep business.

The place in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1933 almost the entire village (43 houses) fell victim to a fire.

According to the 2011 census, there were 178 inhabitants in Pokryváč, all of them Slovaks .

130 residents supported the Evangelical Church AB, 46 residents of the Roman Catholic Church and two residents were non-denominational.
