history

The name Medzibrodie literally means "intermediate ford " and refers to the ford through the Orava that once existed .

Archaeological investigations in 1982 revealed the remains of a fortified settlement in the Hallstatt period . The current place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1357 and was then a subject village organized according to Wallachian law in the rulership of the Arwaburg on the right bank of the Orava. Traditional names that have come down to us include Medzbrode (1420), Medzibrogy (1474), Meczybrogh (1547), Medzibrodie (1625) and Medzibrod (1786). In 1624 the village had about 110 inhabitants and was devastated during the Kuruc uprising . After a devastating flood in 1813, the decision was made to rebuild it on the left bank of the Orava. In 1827 a fire caused great damage. In 1828 there were 87 houses and 720 inhabitants who were employed as farmers, cattle herders and stonemasons.

The place in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
