Párnica is a municipality in the north-center of Slovakia with 926 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is located in Okres Dolný Kubín within the Žilinský kraj and at the same time in the traditional Orava landscape .

Main street and church

The community is located between the southwestern end of the Oravská vrchovina hill country and the eastern foothills of the Little Fatra . The village stretches on both sides of the Zázrivka brook , which above the village (towards Zázrivá ) breaks through the massif of the Little Fatra and flows into the Orava at the lower end . The highest point is the Veľký Rozsutec ( 1610  m nm ) northwest of the place. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 458  m nm and is nine kilometers from Dolný Kubín .

history

Párnica was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1420 as villa Paranice and was a place administered by hereditary bailiffs in the estate of the Arwa Castle . In 1778 there were 876 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 196 houses with 685 inhabitants. Besides agriculture, sheep breeding, rafting and handicrafts were the main sources of income. In the 19th century there was a paper mill, later three quarries, all of which are now closed.

The place in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 809 inhabitants in Párnica, of whom 775 were Slovaks, 2 Magyars, 1 Moravian and 2 others. 29 residents gave no information. 530 residents committed themselves to the Protestant Church AB, 180 residents to the Roman Catholic Church. 64 residents had no denomination and 29 residents had no denomination.

The 1st order road 70 ( Kraľovany –Dolný Kubín – Polish border) runs through the village and the 2nd order road 583 ( Žilina - Terchová –Párnica) ends. There is a train station on the Kraľovany – Suchá Hora railway line .
