Bziny (Hungarian Bezine - until 1888 Bzine ) is a municipality in the north-center of Slovakia with 582 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is located in Okres Dolný Kubín within the Žilinský kraj and at the same time in the traditional Orava landscape .
geography
The village is located on the left bank of the Orava in the Oravská vrchovina mountains . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 502 m nm and is five kilometers from Dolný Kubín .
Neighboring municipalities are Dolný Kubín (district Kňažia ) in the north, Medzibrodie nad Oravou in the northeast, Pucov in the east and again Dolný Kubín (districts Dolný Kubín and Mokraď) in the south and west.
history
The name of the place is derived from the Slovak name for elder , baza .
The first written mention can be traced back to 1345; at that time the place name was Bazina . After 1379 a new Wallachian village was built next to the existing rural village. In 1420 the whole village belonged to the dominion of the Arwaburg . Because of its location on the royal main street, there was multiple devastation in the 17th century due to class and Kuruc uprisings. In 1828 there were 84 houses and 599 inhabitants who were employed as farmers, wood processors and stonemasons.
The place in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
From 1971 to 1993 Bziny was a part of Dolný Kubín.

According to the 2011 census, Bziny had 546 inhabitants, including 533 Slovaks , two Czechs and one Pole . 10 residents gave no information on ethnicity .
495 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, five residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident to the Orthodox Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 29 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 15 residents was not determined.
