The Kraľovany – Suchá Hora railway line (historically German also Arwatalbahn ) is a branch line in Slovakia . It runs from Kraľovany on the bank of the Waag through the valley of the Orava River (German Arwa ) via Dolný Kubín and Tvrdošín to Trstená . The line that continues to the former Suchá Hora border station and on to Nowy Targ ( Neumarkt ) in Poland is no longer in operation.

history

The first plans to build a railway line in Arwa County emerged in the 1880s, when Slovakia was still part of the Kingdom of Hungary . The 70.4 km long railway line was built in three parts:

1. Kraľovany - Oravský Podzámok (opened December 4, 1898)
2. Oravský Podzámok - Tvrdošín (opened June 18, 1899)
3. Tvrdošín - Suchá Hora (opened December 21, 1899)

The railway line ended a few hundred meters from the then border between Hungary and Galicia . In 1904 the gap to the Galician city of Nowy Targ was closed.

After the Second World War, the cross-border line between Czechoslovakia and Poland was no longer used and Suchá Hora became the terminus again. Regular passenger traffic ended in the early 1970s and the 14 km long route between Suchá Hora and Trstená was officially closed on January 1, 1975 and dismantled in the 1980s. Since then, the operational length has been 56.45 km.

Today several local trains and an express train to Dolný Kubin from Žilina run on the route. The travel time between the endpoints is around 105 minutes.
