Clay-Ashland is a small town in the West African Republic of Liberia in Montserrado County .

The village Clay-Ashland is located about 16 kilometers north of the capital Monrovia on the banks of the Saint Paul River . The place name is reminiscent of the wealthy plantation owner, lawyer, politician and Senator Henry Clay from Lexington (Kentucky) , he was a co-founder of the American Colonization Society , Ashland was the feudal residence of Clay in Lexington (Kentucky).
At the request of the Kentucky faction of the American Colonization Society , in 1846 an area of ​​approximately 100 square kilometers was acquired by the Kru to enable the establishment of the Kentucky colony in Africa . Clay-Ashland was determined as the capital of this new colony and was built up with emigrants from the US state of Kentucky.

The settlers were very successful in building plantations for growing sugar cane , coffee and ginger .

The rural town of Clay-Ashland was the center of life for two Liberian presidents: Alfred F. Russell (9th President) and William D. Coleman (13th President). With the ruins of the "Masonic Temple of Clay-Asland", the place has a monument from its heyday in the late 19th century. In 1869 the True Whig Party was founded in “Clay-Ashland” , it was the state party of the Ameriko-Liberians.

The Ricks Institute boarding school was founded in 1887 and is a traditional educational institution in the West African Republic of Liberia. The railway line of the Bong Mining Railway , built in the 1960s, runs along the left bank of the Saint Paul River .
