The Cesta I. triedy 51 ( Slovak for '1st order street 51'), I / 51 for short , is a 1st order street in Slovakia . It leads from the Czech border near Holíč through Trnava , Nitra , Levice and Banská Štiavnica to the place Hronská Breznica near Zvolen . The end was until 2009 in the village of Hontianske Nemce south of Banská Štiavnica; so far the part between Trnava and Nitra was also part of the common part with the R1 . By omitting the part between Trnava and Nitra, the road is divided into two parts (Czech border – Trnava and Nitra – Hronská Breznica).

Trnavský kraj

I / 51 at the Trnava bypass

The I / 51 begins at the former Holíč- Hodonín border crossing on the border with the Czech Republic and initially runs through the Záhorie landscape and its cities and towns such as Holíč, Senica and Jablonica . At the Jablonica Pass, the road crosses the Small Carpathian Mountains and enters the large Danube lowlands in its more hilly part. After passing through other towns such as Trstín and Boleráz , the road turns east of the city of Trnava before ending for the first time at the R1 expressway behind the city.

Nitriansky kraj

I / 51 reappears at the roundabout in Nitra-Zobor and continues through the hilly Danube lowlands. The large Mochovce nuclear power plant is visible between Vráble and Kalná nad Hronom . At the second place it crosses another great Slovak river, the Hron and reaches the larger town of Levice . From here the Schemnitz Mountains are visible; she leaves the nitriansky kraj when she touches them.

Banskobystrický kraj

Until 2009, the road ended in Hontianske Nemce , where it merged into the south-north road I / 66 (part of the European route 77 ). From 2010, when the former national road II / 525 was incorporated into I / 51, the road runs parallel to the Štiavnička river in the Schemnica Mountains before reaching the village of Svätý Anton and the old mining towns of Banská Štiavnica and Banská Belá . At Hronská Breznica it ends again at the R1.
