Holíč (until 1946 in Slovak "Holič"; German Holitsch - older also Weißkirchen , Hungarian Holics ) is a city in northwestern Slovakia . The March , which flows about 4 kilometers north of the city, forms the border with the Czech Republic ; A border crossing to Hodonín leads across the river . Until 2007, the cadastral municipality of Pláňavy also belonged to the municipality.
history
The city was first mentioned in writing as Wywar in 1205 . The dominion in Weißkirchen was a Hungarian fiefdom, which was given to Kaspar Schlick by Emperor Albrecht II after the Stibor von Stibrowitz died out in 1438 . In 1736 the city was acquired by Franz I Stephan (HRR) , the husband of Maria Theresa . Among other things, he built a porcelain and faience factory, which led to the city's growth. Maria Theresa had the Holíč Castle converted from a fortress into a summer palace of the Habsburgs.
Holíč's once thriving Jewish community has completely disappeared in the Holocaust.
