Mokrý Háj (Hungarian Horvátberek - until 1907 Mokriháj ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with 722 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) that the skalica district of, a circle kraj Trnavský heard and in the traditional landscape Záhorie lies.

Church in place

The community is located in the Myjavská pahorkatina hill country by the Mokrohájsky potok and Starohorský potok streams . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 261  m nm and is four and a half kilometers from Skalica .

Neighboring municipalities are Skalica in the north and east, Radošovce in the southeast, Popudinské Močidľany in the south and Prietržka in the west.

history

Mokrý Háj was founded in 1569 and first settled by Croats from the occupied parts of Croatia during the Turkish wars . They received a piece of land from the town of Skalitz and a 20-year exemption from all subordinate obligations. But already in the 17th century the village lost its Croatian-speaking character and was gradually Slovakized. Mokrý Háj was and is characterized by agriculture.

Until 1918, the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

The place name means something like "wet grove".

population

According to the 2011 census, 660 people lived in Mokrý Háj, including 634 Slovaks, four Czechs, three Moravians, two Magyars and one Pole. Four residents indicated a different ethnic group and 12 residents gave no information in this regard. 520 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, eight residents to the Evangelical Church AB, two residents each to the Greek Catholic Church and two residents to the Congregational Church and one resident to the Reformed Church. 82 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 45 residents was not determined.
