The municipality became known for its mining industry and was often united with Banská Štiavnica to the southwest .

history

The place was founded in the 13th century by the town of Banská Štiavnica on the site of several silver mines (first mentioned in 1352). In 1450 he received the privilege of the Royal Free City and in 1453 he was the smallest member of the Heptapolitana (the 7 mining towns of Central Slovakia and Lower Hungary ).

In 1552 and again in 1664, the then city was visited by the Turks and badly affected. With the decline of mining, the town came to Banská Štiavnica in 1788. The revitalization of the mining industry gave it a renewed independence as a city from 1848 to 1873. The place has only existed independently since 1954.
