Štiavnické Bane (until 1948 in Slovak "Piarg"; German Siegelsberg , Hungarian Hegybánya - until 1892 Pjerg / Pierg ) is a municipality in Kraj Banská Bystrica in central Slovakia . It is located in the Schemnitz Mountains , about 5 km from Banská Štiavnica .
The place was first mentioned in 1352 as Sygluspergh . There is a Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph from 1734 and a chapel of St. John of Nepomuk in the village. In the area there are reservoirs built in the 18th century - the so-called tajchy (Sing. Tajch ; German pond). There are six tajchy in the municipality . In 1948 the place was renamed from the "German" sounding name Piarg to the "Slovakian" name Štiavnické Bane .
