Sándor Jávorka

Sándor Jávorka (born March 12, 1883 in Hegbánya , † September 28, 1961 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian botanist . Its botanical author's abbreviation is “ Jáv. ".

Life

After attending school in Selmecbánya , Sándor Jávorka studied at the University of Budapest and received his doctorate there in 1906 with a thesis on the genus Onosma . From 1905 he was employed in the Botanical Department of the Hungarian National Museum, where he worked until 1940, most recently as its director. Even after retiring, he continued to work there. In 1939 he received a professorship at the University of Budapest. In 1936 he became a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, seven years later a permanent member. In 1952 he was awarded the Kossuth Prize .

The focus of Jávorka's scientific work was the taxonomy of plants and flora of Hungary, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Albania. From 1903 he published over 220 works, including 18 books. His central works include Flora Hungarica (1924-25) , published in 1924/25, and the supplementary panel work Iconographia Florae Partis Austro-Orientalis Europae Centralis (1929-1934, with co-author Vera Csapody), as well as several identification books and a biography of the Hungarian botanist Pál Kitaibel .
