Banský Studenec (until 1948 Slovak "Kolpachy"; German co [h] lbach or Goldbach , Hungarian Tópatak - to 1892 Kolpach ) is a small town in the Okres Banská Štiavnica ( Banskobystrický kraj ) in the middle of Slovakia , (with 467 inhabitants as of 31 December 2019).
The municipality is located in the eastern part of the Schemnitz Mountains on the Jasenica stream , eight kilometers east of Banská Štiavnica . There are two tajchy ("reservoirs") in the municipality - Veľký kolpašský tajch and Malý kolpašský tajch .
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1266 as Kulpach . In the 14th century it belonged to the city of Schemnitz. In addition to mining, the residents were also active in coal distillery, forestry and metallurgy. At its peak, the place had 1200 inhabitants, after the extensive closure of the mines in the early 19th century, the number of inhabitants fell sharply. In 1828 the place had 66 houses and 398 inhabitants.
In Banský Studenec there is a baroque Roman Catholic church from the years 1743–45 and a wooden bell tower from the early 19th century.
