Environment and ascent

The Pietra is located in the northern part of the Brenta group. Significant neighboring mountains are in the south, separated by the Passo del Grostè , with the mountain station of the Cabinovia Grostè cable car , 2nd section, at an altitude of 2,446 meters, the 2,898 meter high Cima del Grostè . Immediately to the north is the Cima Vagliana, at 2864 meters high and finally, separated by the Bocchetta dei Tre Sassi (2613 m), the 2914 meter high Corno di Flavona . To the west the area runs out into the Vallesinella ( Sinella valley ), to the northeast into the Val di Santa Maria della Flavona . The closest towns to the west are Madonna di Campiglio in the Campigliotal , about 5 kilometers away as the crow flies , in the south-east is Molveno on Lake Molveno and about 17 km in the south, San Lorenzo in Banale .

Compton and his companions reached the mountain from Madonna di Campiglio via the Bocchetta dei Tre Sassi pass. The group first climbed the immediately neighboring Cima Vagliana via the north ridge. After a descent through the south wall of the Vagliana was reached by a then filled with still Firn Kar and stepped over the pietra north ridge to the highest point. According to Compton, it took 6 hours and 15 minutes to go from the valley to the summit. Today's base for an ascent of the Pietra Grande is the Rifugio Giorgio Graffer al Grostè located at 2261 meters above sea level, at the top station of the Grostè cable car, where numerous hiking trails and via ferratas begin.
