Sebechleby (German Siebenbrot or Klieb , Hungarian Szebelléb ) is a place and a municipality in the middle of Slovakia with 1208 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is located in Okres Krupina , a district of Banskobystrický kraj .

geography

The community is located on the southern slope of the Schemnitz Mountains on the Belujský brook , 13 kilometers southwest of Krupina and 30 kilometers east of Levice . It traditionally belongs to the Hont landscape .

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1135 as Zebehgleb . In the early 13th century, German colonists from the Saxon- speaking area settled, who, together with the resident Magyars and Slavs, "cleared forests and made the soil arable". In 1233 the Romanesque church is mentioned. In 1412 the place received city ​​rights from King Sigismund and becomes a town. In the course of the 16th and 17th centuries, the place was affected several times during the Turkish wars , as in 1543, 1626 or 1676. Although the assembly of the Hont County met in Siebenbrot, due to the constant war it could not be a town again become. In 1828 the place had 177 houses and 1057 inhabitants and the population was active in agriculture, fruit growing and viticulture, earlier (17th / 18th century) handicrafts were also widespread. Around 1900 artificial caves in the village and in the cellars of the nearby wine mountains were examined by the local pastor Johann Novotny and the cave researcher Lambert Karner and cave plans were made.
