Terany (German Terin , Hungarian Terény ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 605 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is located in Okres Krupina , a district of Banskobystrický kraj .
geography
The municipality is located in the Ipeľská pahorkatina , a part of the Slovakian Danube lowlands , on both sides of the Štiavnica . Further east you get to the Krupinská planina , while the foothills of the Schemnitz Mountains rise to the north . The town center is located at an altitude of 152 m nm and is 16 kilometers from Šahy and 26 kilometers from Krupina .
Neighboring municipalities are Hontianske Tesáre in the north, Dudince in the east and south and Hontianske Moravce in the west.
history
Today's community was created in 1944 through the merger of Dolné Terany (German Unterterin , Hungarian Alsóterény ) and Horné Terany (German Oberterin , Hungarian Felsőterény ).
Horné Terany was first mentioned in writing in 1298 as Teryan , Dolné Terany only in 1387 as Kysteryen . The surrounding land belonged to the Hunt dynasty, who was powerful in the Middle Ages , and after the breakdown of ownership, the village came under the dominion of the monastery in Bzovík . After the invasion of the Ottomans after the Battle of Mohács, the area was part of the Sanjak Novigrad until the end of the 16th century. In 1828 there were 39 houses and 285 inhabitants in Horné Terany, 29 houses and 299 inhabitants in Dolné Terany. The main sources of income were agriculture and viticulture.
Until 1918, the places in Hont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Terany had 680 inhabitants, 597 of whom were Slovaks , 33 Roma , four Magyars and one Czech . 45 residents gave no information on ethnicity.
335 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 234 residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident each to the Mormons and the Pentecostal movement. 57 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 52 inhabitants was not determined.

The 1st order road 66 ( E 77 ) passes through Terany between Šahy on the Hungarian border and Zvolen . The municipality has a stop on the Zvolen – Čata railway line , which has only been used for freight traffic since 2003.
