history

Aerial view of the Bzovík monastery fortress

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1135 as Bozouk . A few years earlier the Premonstratensian monastery was built, which was probably founded by a member of the Hont-Pázmány family. The long history of the place is connected with the monastery and later fortress; In the Middle Ages, the monastery was the seat of the largest estate in the Hont County and therefore got into disputes several times with the town of Karpfen (Krupina) and Čabraab Castle . In 1443 the place and the monastery were destroyed by the Hussites. In the middle of the 16th century it was decided to convert the monastery into a fortress in order to stop the Turkish advance into the mountain towns of what is now central Slovakia. For this reason, the first church in Bzovík was built in 1606. In 1828 the place had 80 houses and 456 inhabitants, mostly working in agriculture.
