  • The Diaľnica D1 is the longest motorway in Slovakia . It is part of the European Routes 50 , 58 , 75 and 571 as well as full-length part of the V. Pan-European transport corridor (road A): Venice - Bratislava - Košice - Uzhhorod . The first section was opened in 1975 between Bratislava and Senec .

In the final stage, the motorway should be 516 km long. It will then lead from Bratislava via Trnava , Trenčín , Púchov , Žilina , Martin , Poprad , Prešov , Košice and Michalovce to the Ukrainian border at Záhor . The motorway currently has four sections with a total length of 380.6 km, thus 73.8 percent of the total length and 85.6 percent of the section between Bratislava and Košice have been completed. Completed contiguous sections are specifically Bratislava – Hričovské Podhradie (188.3 km), Dubná Skala – Turany (16.4 km), Ivachnová – Prešov-západ (142.4 km) and Prešov-juh – Bidovce (33.5 km) ).

Five construction sections with a total length of 48 km are under construction and are to be opened to traffic in the period 2020–2023. The Turany – Hubová construction section and all construction sections east of Bidovce are planned for a total of 88 km.

A total of twelve tunnels are planned, six of which will be on the section between Žilina and Ružomberok. The finished tunnels are Branisko (first tunnel tube, 4975 m), Bôrik (999 m), Šibenik (588 m) and Lučivná (250 m). Five more tunnels are under construction: Ovčiarsko (2367 m), Žilina (687 m), Višňové (7520 m), Čebrať (3650 m) and Prešov (2244 m).

With the exception of the Bratislava city route (exits 0-14), there is a Slovak vignette requirement for vehicles up to 3.5 t and electronic tolls for vehicles over 3.5 t on the entire motorway .

    history

Era of Czechoslovakia and the Slovak State (1930s to 1993)

Trnava motorway junction (with the R1 expressway )

The first plans for a motorway connection from Bohemia (from Cheb via Pilsen or Prague ) via Slovakia to Mukachevo in the Ukrainian Transcarpathian Oblast (then part of Czechoslovakia ) appeared in the 1930s, more precisely in 1935. First they saw No connection to Bratislava is planned yet. Construction began in the late 1930s in the Czech part (for more details see article Dálnice 1 ), but not in Slovakia for the time being. The Slovak state planned to build a motorway from Bratislava via Žilina and further to the east of the country; however, there was no more construction.

After the Second World War, the construction of the motorway was first resumed in the Czech part in 1946, but slowed down after the KSČ came to power and finally stopped in 1950 due to high costs in favor of the reconstruction of the country. Traffic increased rapidly in the 1960s and new plans were drawn up. In the government resolution of April 10, 1963, the D1 motorway in the route from Prague via Brno , Uherské Hradiště , Trenčín, Vrútky, Ružomberok, Poprad, Košice to the Soviet border was established with a length of 712 km, 402 km of which in Slovakia; The 107 km long D61 motorway from Bratislava via Trnava to the D1 near Trenčín was also planned.

Dovalovec viaduct near Liptovský Hrádok was built in the 1980s

In 1967 the construction of the motorway began again near Prague; In Slovakia, construction began in 1972 with the 7.1 km section Liptovský Mikuláš - Liptovský Ján and in 1973 on the Ivachnová –Liptovský Mikuláš section, together with the dam of the Liptov reservoir . Before that, in 1972, the construction of the almost 17 km long section from Bratislava to Senec (at that time still called D61) began. In the course of the 1970s the motorway was extended to Trnava (a total of 36 km). In the 1980s, the 19 km long section between Prešov and Budimír (near Košice ) came to the east ; the port bridge was opened in Bratislava in 1983 . In Liptov , the existing motorway was extended in 1983 to Liptovský Hrádok , including the 1038 m long viaduct near Podtureň , and in 1986 to Hybe (single-lane, second carriageway in 1990). The D61 reached the village of Červeník near Hlohovec in 1982 , Piešťany in 1985 and Horná Streda in 1988 , where the motorway ended until 1998.

In 1987 the current connection from D2 to the Austrian border was added as part of the D61 (today D4 ). Until the separation of Czechoslovakia there were four completed sections: 4.3 km within Bratislava, 79 km from Bratislava-Vajnory to Horná Streda, 34.4 km from Ivachnová to Hybe and 19.1 km from Prešov to Budimír.

    In independent Slovakia (after 1993)

After 1993 the motorway was first extended from Bratislava, so that by the end of 1998 the end of the motorway was behind Ladce , an extension of 62.5 km. The first line to go into operation was the Chocholná – Nemšová (Trenčín bypass) in November 1996. In the Liptov , the route from Hybe east to Važec was extended by 10.6 km. With the exception of the Chocholná – Nemšová section, the completed lines were initially only single-lane. For financial reasons, the new government of Mikuláš Dzurinda stopped the construction and planning of further routes in 1999 and stopped work on the Ladce – Sverepec, Vrtižer – Hričovské Podhradie, Važec – Mengusovce and Fričovce bypass, only the Branisko tunnel to be continued. Only the existing single-lane routes were expanded until 2000 and, despite the construction stop, work began in June 1999 on the Bratislava city passage between the Mierová and Senecká streets. In 2002, construction work on the other routes was gradually resumed. In the meantime, the D61 and the old D1 were combined in 1999 in order to set up the new route from Bratislava, but the planning for the short route from the Czech border near Drietoma to Trenčín was discarded .

In the 2000s, construction of the gaps on the western section (Bratislava – Žilina) began: two gaps were closed in Bratislava in the east of the city at the airport (August 2002) and in Petržalka (December 2005). In the Waag Valley, the sections Beluša -Sverepec (December 2005), Vrtižer-Dolný Hričov (January 2007) and the urban route through Považská Bystrica (May 2010) were released.

Green bridge between Poprad and Spišský Štvrtok, in the background the High Tatras

In northern Slovakia, the Liptov motorway (Ivachnová-Važec) was extended further east to Mengusovce (December 2007), Poprad (December 2009) and Spišský Štvrtok (December 2008). In 2003, the Branisko Tunnel , which runs through the Branisko Mountains, was opened (but with only one lane) and the 3 km long bypass of Široké, which had existed since 2001, was extended by a further 3 km eastwards. In 2005 the construction of the 7 km long stretch from Svinia to Prešov began, which was opened in June 2010. In the same month, an 8.5 km long, partly single-lane section was opened below the Spiš Castle , where the missing carriageway was built by December 2012.

Routes to Košice, which were carried out as PPP projects during the government of the Fico I cabinet . These are the Dubná Skala – Turany, Turany – Hubová, Hubová – Ivachnová, Jánovce – Jablonov and Fričovce – Svinia routes with a total length of 75 km. The planned costs were around 2.1 billion euros. Completion was scheduled for 2012. The construction time of four years and construction costs of 1.9 billion euros were planned for this route. The Slovak government would pay around EUR 12.7 billion for the 30-year concession period for the above routes.

On September 2, 2010 the new government (see parliamentary elections in Slovakia 2010 ) canceled the PPP projects for the routes east of Vrútky, as the construction companies were unable to secure the financing despite several postponements (ultimately until the end of August 2010). On December 14, 2010, the PPP project between Hričovské Podhradie and Vrútky was also discontinued due to the high prices despite the discounts offered.

Due to the heavy traffic on the Bratislava – Trnava line (traffic volume in 2005 at Chorvátsky Grob: 51,307 vehicles / 24 hours, 2010: 71,088 vehicles / 24 hours), the route between Bratislava-Vajnory and Trnava was upgraded to six lanes (initially without hard shoulder) in 2008 to Expanded in 2009 and officially opened on November 12, 2009.

Dubná Skala – Turany section opened in 2015, here at the Martin motorway junction

On July 10, 2015, after a five-year break, another section of the motorway was opened to traffic, namely between Dubná Skala and Turany ( Martin bypass , 16.4 km). The completion was originally planned for the end of 2014, but was due to a flood in May 2014 as well as the suspension of payments by the construction company Váhostav towards subcontractors. Construction of the Spišský Štvrtok – Levoča section began on June 20, 2011, with the original expected commissioning in December 2013. On the stretch still under construction, a bridge segment at Iliašovce fell in November 2012, killing four people and injuring twelve , a. Financial problems at the construction company also led to delays, so that the section was only opened on October 20, 2015. Only one month later, the subsequent section between Levoča and Jablonov (Levoča bypass, 9.5 km) with the 588 m long Šibenik tunnel was opened to traffic on November 30, 2015. The last of the four construction phases approved in 2015 was the Fričovce – Svinia section (11.2 km, under construction since November 2011). This means that the D1 between Ivachnová and Prešov can be used continuously over a length of 142.4 km.

The newest section, Budimír-Bidovce (14.4 km), was opened to traffic on December 16, 2019 after a construction period of 37 months. It forms part of the outer bypass of the second largest Slovak city Košice and is linked to the future southeast bypass in the route of the R2 expressway via the Rozhanovce motorway triangle. The contractor was the Swedish company Skanska and invested 197.4 million euros.

    State of development

    The "extended" motorway near Senec

The majority of the motorway has two lanes plus hard shoulder in each direction. Slow traffic lanes are available on steep inclines. The 7.3 km long stretch between the Beharovce bridge and the east portal of the Branisko tunnel is initially only built with two lanes. The part between the Bratislava-Vajnory and Trnava junctions (a total of about 36 km) has three lanes in each direction, but without hard shoulder and is provided with "temporary" orange markings instead of the normal white ones; there is also a speed limit of 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. 110 km / h. In 2014, on some sections within Bratislava, the hard shoulder fell victim to an additional lane in each direction in the form of continuous entry / exit lanes in an attempt to keep the traffic flowing. The approximately 500-meter-long stretch between the Petržalka motorway triangle and the Bratislava-Incheba half-junction is the only motorway in Slovakia to have eight lanes.

    future

Construction work on the west portal of the 7.5 km long Višňové tunnel, August 2015

The completion date for the entire route from Bratislava to Košice is uncertain. The route between Žilina and Ružomberok will be particularly complex , as numerous tunnels and bridges have to be built in the course of crossing the Little and Big Fatra.

    Sections under construction

On November 7, 2013, the operator NDS as signed the contract for the construction of the Hubová – Ivachnová line (Ružomberok bypass, 15.3 km) with the construction period from November 2013 to June 2017; However, construction did not officially begin until February 11, 2014. Due to the unstable soil conditions at the western portal of the Čebrať tunnel, construction work was partially suspended in spring 2015 after the tunnel itself had already been under construction for six months. As an alternative to the slope renovation, there is a northern relocation of the motorway and an extension of the Čebra 36 tunnel to 3650 m., Which was ultimately decided and after the new environmental impact assessment came into force in July 2018, construction work was resumed. In addition to the tunnel extension, the Hubová – Ivachnová section was shortened by 353 meters. Currently (September 2018) NDS as is expecting the commissioning in 2022.

For the Hričovské Podhradie – Lietavská Lúčka (11.3 km) line, a construction contract has been in place since December 2013 with the original construction period from January 2014 to January 2018; As part of this project, two tunnels - Ovčiarsko (2367 m) and Žilina (687 m) - and large bridges at Dolný Hričov (1804 m) and Lietavská Lúčka (1081 m) will be built. Completion is currently expected in 2020, as there were, among other things, construction delays due to geological disturbances and since the feeder to Žilina, which is necessary for the commissioning of this route, will only be ready at this time. The public competition for the Lietavská Lúčka – Dubná Skala route (with the 7,520 m long Višňové tunnel , 13.5 km) had been running since December 2011 and was not concluded until June 2014 after several appeals and appeals. The construction contract worth 410 million euros (excluding VAT) provides for a construction period until December 2019 (66 months), the official start of construction took place on June 17, 2014. After several delays, both tunnels were knocked through in August and September 2018, but calculated construction work until 2022. However, a number of delays and non-payments by the contractor to the supplier led to the decision of NDS as to terminate the construction contract in March 2019. A new competition will only be advertised in the second half of 2019 after the necessary inventory has been completed, with complete completion is now expected in 2023.

In eastern Slovakia, the official construction of the 7.9 km long section Prešov, západ – Prešov, juh began on May 30, 2017. It will connect the two ends of the motorway to the west and south of the third largest Slovak city, Prešov, and thus relieve the city of some of the transit traffic. The 2.2 km long Prešov tunnel is being built as part of the section. The planned completion date is June 2021.

Planned construction phases and further construction measures

The Branisko tunnel is to be supplemented by the second tube, but according to current plans, construction is not Template: future / in 2 yearsscheduled to start until 2022 . For the sections Bidovce – Dargov, Dargov – Pozdišovce and Pozdišovce – state border SK / UA there is only a planned start of construction in 2029, with total completion in 2029.

The planned Turany – Hubová section through the Great Fatra is particularly controversial. It used to be planned to lead the motorway under the mountains with the 6 km long Korbeľka tunnel south of the Waag and thus bypass the bottleneck at Kraľovany , but since 2008 the Ministry of Transport has been using a surface variant with tunnels Rojkov (1.8 km) and Havran (2.6 km), but many more bridge structures were implemented along the Waag. However, this is being questioned by the environmental protection organizations, especially in connection with the 15,000-year-old peat bog of Rojkov and a number of small-scale nature reserves around Kraanyovany, which are part of the Natura 2000 network . For this reason, the European Commission examined the environmental impact of the section and approved this variant in December 2012 after proposals from the Ministry of Transport to “reduce ecological damage” were accepted. A landslide near Šútovo in April 2013 impaired the planned route, so that another change to a tunnel variant with the Korbeľka tunnel came into play again. This variant became definitive in January 2018 after objections to the results of the environmental impact assessment carried out were rejected by the Slovak Ministry of the Environment. According to NDS, construction should ideally begin in 2021 and be completed in 2026 and cost around 880 million euros (excluding VAT). Participation by the private sector is not excluded (as of January 2018).

In addition, the section between Bratislava-Vajnory and Trnava is to be expanded to form a motorway with at least six lanes and a hard shoulder. Even before the actual expansion, the existing Blatné driveway was converted into a complete junction in November 2017 and the surrounding section of the motorway was already expanded into a regular motorway cross-section with hard shoulder. Furthermore, work will be carried out on the new Triblavina junction (between Chorvátsky Grob and Bernolákovo ) until 2021.

However, the embodiment of the widening of the motorway from Bratislava to Blatné is not without controversy: while a six-lane expansion with collector lanes on both sides with local connections was planned, the NDS as and the Ministry of Transport developed new plans in 2016, which now provides for an eight-lane motorway without collector lanes, since, according to their statement, this is “an effective and well-founded solution for economic and traffic reasons”, and one does not want to “concentrate traffic on one place”. The building permit for the Triblavina junction, however, expected collector carriageways, and the new planning aroused opposition from representatives of the Bratislavský kraj self-governing body and the Triblavina civic association . T. consists of local politicians. The planned connection of the Bratislava ring road D4 to the D1 at Ivanka pri Dunaji is causing further uncertainty in the preparation of the final plans.

    Others

On the Horná Streda - Nové Mesto nad Váhom section, which was opened in 1998, there is an approximately 3.2 km long temporary motorway airport . This runs almost exactly in a north-south direction and begins at the Lúky junction and ends at the Hrádok rest area, which is designed as a parking area on both sides. However, no military exercise has taken place there to this day. Location of the auxiliary motorway airport

Up until a few years ago, the completed sections between Trenčín and Košice had kilometer tables with a 180 km higher count than the current state (e.g. km 452 near Liptovský Mikuláš and km 607 near Budimír). This is due to the planning of the old Czechoslovak D1 motorway, so the figures indicate the distance from the start of the motorway in Prague.
