The Branisko Tunnel (Slovak Tunel Branisko ) is a single-tube tunnel in eastern Slovakia between Levoča and Prešov , on the D1 motorway .
The tunnel is 4975 m long and runs through the Branisko Mountains between the villages of Korytné in the west and Široké in the east and replaced the state road I / 18 over the Branisko Pass . Construction began in May 1997 from both portals using the new Austrian tunneling method , after the excavation of the exploratory tunnel had been in progress since April 1996; the ceremonial breakthrough took place on May 1, 1999. The tunnel was opened to traffic on June 29, 2003. The cost of the tunnel amounted to about 8 billion SKK (approximately 265 million euros ).
The Branisko tunnel is currently the longest in Slovakia and is currently under construction. The carriageway is 7.5 m wide between the curbs, the clearance height is 4.5 m and there are six emergency bays and 13 escape routes of 360 m each, which are connected to the escape tunnel. The maximum speed is 80 km / h.
The building was repeatedly criticized for being overpriced: the state paid SKK 1.9 billion for the delivery of the technological equipment alone instead of the planned SKK 700 million. In addition, the managers of the then building owner Slovenská správa ciest are said to have enriched themselves with transfers to Swiss bank accounts for state contracts.
