Svinica (German Swinitz , Hungarian Petőszinye - until the 19th century Szinye ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 916 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) that the okolie Kosice Okres , part of Košický kraj belongs.

geography

The village is located on the eastern edge of the Košická kotlina basin and on the western slope of the Slanské vrchy mountains , in the valley of the Svinický creek in the Hornád river system . The northwest part of the municipality has the character of a deforested hill country, while the southeast part is mountainous. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 252  m nm and is 19 kilometers from Košice .

Neighboring municipalities are Nižná Kamenica in the north, Košický Klečenov in the east, Dargov , Malé Ozorovce , Zemplínska Teplica and Slanské Nové Mesto in the southeast, Ruskov and Ďurkov in the south, Olšovany in the west and Bidovce in the northwest.

history

Svinica was first mentioned in writing as Zyne in 1276 , further historical names are Scine (1280), Scynnue (1293), Scywynia (1302/69), Szyna (1427), Zwynne (1430), Szinye (1630) and Swinicza (1773) ). It belonged to the Amadé family , then to the Füzér manor and from the 14th century to the Perényi family . The village received toll rights in 1390 and retained it until the late Middle Ages. In 1427 a total of 70 porta are recorded. In 1601 the village became part of the Trebischau Castle estate . In 1828 there were 81 houses and 626 inhabitants, who lived mainly from agriculture, but also forestry and some crafts.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Abaúj-Torna County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. The village was badly damaged during the Battle of Dargov Pass at the turn of the year 1944/1945 in the course of the Second World War .

population

According to the 2011 census, 832 inhabitants lived in Svinica, including 700 Slovaks, 89 Roma, 10 Magyars, 2 Czechs and 1 Russian and 1 Ukrainian. 29 residents gave no information in this regard. 539 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 84 residents to the Reformed Church, 78 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 51 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 4 residents each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Evangelical Methodist Church and 1 resident to the Orthodox Church ; 3 residents professed a different denomination. 31 residents had no denomination and 37 residents had no denomination.

Buildings

  • Reformed church in the mixed Romanesque-Gothic style from the 12th century with medieval frescoes, today it houses an exhibition on the history of the place and the church itself

traffic

The 1st order road 50 runs right through Svinica on the Košice – Ukrainian border section. At the municipal border with Bidovce it crosses with the 2nd order road 576, not far from there a connection to the still-to-be-built D1 motorway is planned.

The nearest train station is in Ruskov , eight kilometers south on the Košice – Chop railway line . Express, IC trains and international connections stop at Košice train station, 19 kilometers away .
