Until 1918/1919, the place in Abaúj-Torna County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Due to the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was again in Hungary from 1938 to 1945.
From 1961 to 1990 the municipality of Sokoľany was merged with the municipality of Bočiar to form the unified municipality Hutníky .
Since 1997 the municipality has been involved in a legal dispute with the city of Košice, in particular about property tax income from the lucrative properties (around 700 hectares in total) in the area of the US Steel Košice steelworks . The cause of the dispute goes back to 1981, when a piece of land covering more than 3700 hectares was separated from a total of 14 municipalities, including the former Hutníky municipality, and assigned to the city of Košice. From 2009 to 2011, the land in question again belonged to the Sokoľany municipality, but this was reversed after further court decisions.
