history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1267 as Ezenca . The name is said to be derived from the Slavic Janisko . Since the late 13th century, the place changed hands often. Documents from the years 1332-1337 confirm the existence of a parish where there was already a stone church dedicated to St. Stephen. In 1427 Haniska had 29 portals , in 1553 only 19 remained.
In 1672 there was a battle between the imperial troops and an army of Kuruzzen near the place. From the end of the 18th century until the revolution of 1848/49 Haniska was a minor town with market rights. In 1828 there were 229 houses and 937 residents here, mostly engaged in agriculture.
Until 1919 the place in Abaúj-Torna County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . At the end of 1925, the first radio broadcast in Slovakia was broadcast here on a trial basis. 1938–1945 the place was again in Hungary due to the First Vienna Arbitration .
