Kechnec (until 1948 Slovak "Kehnec" - to 1927 "Keňhec"; Hungarian Kenyhec ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,193 (December 31, 2019). It is located in Okres Košice-okolie , a part of Košický kraj .

geography

Kechnec is located in the south of the Košická kotlina basin not far from the Hungarian border on the right bank of the Sokoliansky potok , 20 kilometers south of Košice . The place is fluidly connected with the neighboring village Seňa and partly also Milhosť .

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1220 as Felnemet . The name indicates a medieval German colonization on the lower reaches of the Hornád , which can also be seen today in the names of the Hungarian communities Tornyosnémeti or Hidasnémeti across the border. The first mill is mentioned in 1338. Since the late 16th century there was an influx of Hungarian and Slovak populations, increasingly at the expense of the Germans. The place was a seat of important generations such as B. Kenyheczi and Csikovics . In 1828 there were 85 houses and 633 inhabitants.

Until 1918, the place in Abaúj-Torna County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Due to the First Vienna Arbitration , it was again in Hungary from 1938-45.

In 1964 the places Kechnec and Milhosť merge to form the municipality called Hraničná pri Hornáde , which was incorporated into the municipality of Seňa in 1986. Kechnec has been independent again since 1990.
