The Miskolc – Košice railway is an electrified main line in Hungary and Slovakia , which was originally built and operated by the kk privileged Theiss Railway . It runs from Miskolc along the Hernád / Hornád river to Košice . Today, the route is part of a national long-distance connection from the Hungarian capital Budapest to eastern Slovakia and on to Poland .

history

Miskolc-Tiszai railway station

The route was planned in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 1840s, but the realization was stopped because of the revolution of 1848/49 .

The kk privileged Theiss Railway opened the line as part of a continuous connection from Budapest via Szolnok and Debrecen on August 14, 1860.

The electrification took place in sections:

  • Košice - Barca: January 18, 1962
  • Barca v Čaňa: November 7, 1984
  • Čaňa - Hidasnémeti: June 5, 1997

The subsequent line to Miskolc was electrified in 1997; This completed the electrification of the continuous route from Poland to Hungary.

Today several local trains as well as the express train "Cracovia" ( Kraków - Lőkösháza ) and InterCity trains "Hornád" and "Rákoczi" (both Košice - Budapest) run on the route . On May 1, 2011, local transport on the Slovak side was discontinued.
